1950 Alfa Romeo 158
The Alfa 158 (and its derivative the 159) remains one of the most successful Grand Prix designs of all time. Also called the ‘Alfetta’, the 1.5 litre, straight-8, supercharged car was originally designed (by Gioacchino Colombo) in 1937/8 for pre-war ‘Voiturette’ racing – sort of equivalent to today’s Formula 2.
The car was immediately successful but the outbreak of WW2 forced Alfa to suspend racing until 1947. The car’s place in racing history was secured when the ‘little’ Alfa, driven by Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina won the very first FIA World Championship for Drivers in 1950. In fact the car won every single race it entered during that first season of the new Formula One.
