1952 Ferrari 500 F2

Following the withdrawal of Alfa Romeo from Formula 1 racing, the FIA announced that the ‘52 season would be run to Formula 2 regulations, limiting cars to 2.0 litre engines.

As it turned out, Ferrari was the only team to have a suitable F2 car ready and subsequently dominated the 1952 and 1953 seasons – winning back-to-back World Driver’s Championships for Alberto Ascari. The car was powered by an inline four-cylinder engine which was mounted behind the front axle, improving weight distribution.

Ascari won 7 consecutive World Championship Grands Prix in this time, establishing a record which stood until Sebastian Vettel broke it in 2013.

The car illustrated is Ascari’s 1952 British Grand Prix winner.
