196B Gold Leaf Team Lotus 49B
I wouldn't normally include an updated car in year 2 in this unofficial 'Hall of Fame', but I have to make an exception here. The Lotus 49 in 1967 had been fast, but the engine had experienced some reliability issues which were subsequently corrected for 1968.
This car makes the cut because after the ground breaking car/engine combination on the 67 Lotus, the team did put again with 2 more. Both were to prove crucial and enduring.
Firstly - title sponsorship was born - and Lotus really pioneered this, bringing much needed cash into play - a situation which every subsequent team continued. Secondly - aerodynamics became a thing. The wing was born - Lotus being the first top team to adopt them.
The revolution was complete and Lotus won the 1968 Constructors Championship, with Graham Hill picking up his third and final world title. The car shown here is Hill's title winning car with which he won the 1968 Mexican GP.
